Empowering Change in Peru's Sacred Valley
Our latest expedition to Cusco, Peru, has been a journey of both heart and hands. Based in the breathtaking city of Cusco, our team of eight volunteers, including Trek Relief board members and seasoned supporters, embarked on a mission to make a tangible difference in the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
Partnership with Mundo Sostenible
Throughout our volunteer days, we traveled to the Sacred Valley to collaborate with our dedicated partners at Mundo Sostenible. Our primary goal was to assist in installing solar panel systems, which are pivotal for sustainable development in this region. This program is designed for small-scale institutions and care facilities that provide essential services, like housing, education, and healthcare, directly to children and elderly adults in their local communities.
Solar Energy Projects Breakdown
In April 2024, our collaborative efforts completed solar energy projects in the communities of Calca and Huycho, located in the Sacred Valley just north of the City of Cusco in southern Peru.
Hogar Yachaychac: Our first stop was this sanctuary for abandoned boys in Calca. Here, the installation of a 3.06kW Grid-Tied PV Solar Energy System with a 6kW Huawei Inverter is set to provide significant energy savings. These savings will not only help the orphanage cut operational costs but also enable the initiation of a program aimed at helping the boys transition to higher education and secure employment after they leave the orphanage. This facility is home to 16 children and 3 staff members, all under the dedicated care of Pavel Marmanillo and his wife.
Hogar Girasoles: At our second site in Huycho, the solar panels will support the construction of new dormitories. The 3.06kW Grid-Tied PV Solar Energy System with a 10kW Huawei Inverter will significantly reduce energy costs, allowing the orphanage to extend its essential services to more children in need. This orphanage, run by Hector and his wife along with a small team, cares for 25 children and 6 staff members, providing a typical orphanage setting for both boys and girls.
Project Outcomes and Future Plans
Solar Panels Installed: A total of 12 solar panels were successfully installed across both project sites.
Cost Savings: These installations will significantly reduce operational costs for the local orphanages.
Positive Community Feedback: Community leaders have reported a positive impact, expressing their gratitude and a strong desire for continued collaboration with Trek Relief.
Adventurous Journey to Machu Picchu
The highlight of our trip was undoubtedly hiking the Salkantay trail to Machu Picchu. Over four challenging days, we hiked at various altitudes, supporting each other every step of the way. Reaching the famous Inca ruins was a triumphant moment, allowing us to explore Peru’s rich culture and stunning natural beauty.
Continuing Our Mission
Our work in Peru is far from over. We are committed to evolving this project by continuing to support and expand our efforts in the Sacred Valley. Strengthening our relationship with local partners and bringing in more volunteers will be key to our ongoing success. Join us in our mission to create sustainable change, and stay tuned for more updates and opportunities to get involved with Trek Relief!
