After a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake and avalanche in 2015 buried Langtang Village, Trek Relief was founded with this project to support long-term recovery efforts in the Langtang Valley—home to 4,500 Tamang and Tibetan people.

Over the course of 14 trips, volunteers helped rebuild teahouses, supported displaced families, and partnered with the community to reconstruct Komin Shyamey Wangphel Secondary School. The Langtang Valley project created local jobs, followed earthquake-safe standards, and restored access to education. Through fundraising, trekking, and hands-on service, volunteers helped bring resilience and hope back to the valley.

Rebuilding Langtang Valley

Disaster Response | Post-Earthquake Rebuild

Background

Langtang Valley, nestled in the Nepalese Himalayas near the Tibetan border, is home to around 4,500 Tamang and Tibetan people. In April 2015, a catastrophic 7.8-magnitude earthquake triggered an avalanche that buried Langtang Village under a sea of rock and ice. The disaster killed an estimated 310 people, including residents, tourists, and rescue personnel, with more than 100 bodies never recovered. The destruction and loss extended throughout the valley, leaving behind immense grief and uncertainty. Witnessing the devastation a year later, Trek Relief Founder Candice Young was moved to create a volunteer-led initiative focused on aid, sustainable rebuilding, and tourism revival through compassionate, service-minded travel.

The Mission

Since 2017, Trek Relief has returned to Langtang Valley for 14 volunteer trips, working alongside the local community to rebuild lives and restore hope. Volunteers helped remove rubble, rebuild family-run teahouses, and provide support to displaced families. Most notably, Trek Relief adopted and reconstructed the Komin Shyamey Wangphel Secondary School at the trailhead of the valley—a $50,000 project made possible through fundraising, donations, and volunteer labor. With guidance from local architects and leaders, the school was rebuilt with earthquake-safe standards and five classrooms, creating jobs and reviving educational access for the children of Langtang.

Project Scope

The Langtang project focuses on providing infrastructure rebuild and financial relief through job creation and fair wages for communities deeply impacted by the earthquake.

A key milestone of the trip is the School Handover Ceremony, celebrating the completion of Komin Shyamey Wangphel Secondary School—rebuilt through the efforts of 81 Trek Relief volunteers across 13 trips. Additionally, volunteers will reconnect with our partners at The Small World, supporting their ongoing medical and food relief efforts with over $25,000 in funding.
